“Starting May 28, a four-decades-old ban on the import of many Italian salumi will be lifted.

Every Italian region and province, and even many towns have their own distinctive salumi, many of them celebrated in weeklong folk festivals. There are fans of Coppa Piacentina or those who swear by Coppa di Parma; there’s an infinite variety of salamis — from Brianza, Vicenza, Cremona and many more, spiced with garlic, juniper and myrtle berries, fennel and red wine…”

As a foodie/lover of all charcuterie / salumi, I cannot wait to try some (all) of the newly allowed Italian cured meats. May 28, a day for cured-meat enthusiasts to rejoice!

MAYA JANE COLES: Essential Mix Two Timer In Under Two Years

It is a great honor for a DJ to be invited to play a set for BBC’s world-renowned Essential Mix, and many great electronic music acts go through their entire careers without ever playing even a single one. Although some older and more experienced DJs have appeared on the program multiple times particularly in the late 90s/early 00s (read: Sasha appearing 28 times or Oakenfold appearing on 36 mixes), to take control of the Essential Mix decks on multiple occasions a DJ needs to be the crème de la crème, especiallyin this day and age of electronic music.

Maya Jane Coles has been producing music since 2008 and played her first Essential Mix at the age of 23 on July 9, 2011. After achieving critical acclaim with her infectious 2010 hit, “What They Say”, she gained international attention and quickly flew to the top ranks of world-class electronic music producers.

She is a highly talented individual with a hyperfocus on the deep and tech house scene and her second Essential Mix less than two years after her debut is undeniable proof that she is here to stay. The mix kicks off on a slower note but by the hour mark you’ll probably be jumping out of your chair if you’re like me. After another full hour of refined deep and dark house tunes, by the end of the mix you’ll be praying for her to play on. More MJC here.

Just listened to Frenchman Fred Falke’s Kitsune minimix via Soundcloud and it is definitely one of the best sun-kissed disco —> electro mix that I have heard in a while.

“Geronimo” is the final track on the 30 minute set and it is exactly what I’ve been missing in electro house… banging yet not over the top, blissful and melodic, pure feel good raging music. Check out the minimix and you’ll know what I’m talking about.

Dan Snaith, aka Caribou makes some absolutely beautiful, dark and danceable electronica as evident by his 2010 album Swim, with the powerful dancefloor destructor “Odessa.” The lyrics describe a failed relationship and while the whole tone of the song is very moody, it is oh-so-dancefloor ready. Hailing from Birmingham, Hannah Wants is one of the multitude of rising electronic music talents from the UK today. I only discovered her music a few days ago, when listening to catz n dogz essential mix (which I highly recommend by the way…) and now I am stoked to have found her unique and irresistible beats. When I heard the “Teardrop on the Fire” vocal sample on the Essential Mix at around [50.05] followed up by some banging deep house with an even smoother passage into a slower, grooving rhythm, I had to pause and find the tracklist STAT and look into what artist made me get out of my chair and dance unrestrainedly with headphones on. A very decent and pretty high quality recording of UK’s legendary James Blake throwing it down at Coachella last weekend. I wasn’t able to make it there this year, so this is the next best thing for me, and his set is absolutely beautiful. This is now convincing me to find a way to buy tickets to one of his sold out shows in SF at Mezzanine coming up. Thanks to Evil Concussion on Soundcloud for posting his recording of the set.

The Nottingham based UK duo Mak & Pasteman take Disclosure’s silky smooth and groovy track “What’s In Your Head” and turn it into a club banger with the 808 bass treatment. Their deep and heavy basslines on this remix are very reminiscent of the Dirtybird or Night Slugs sound to me, and I think you’ll enjoy this one quite a bit if you’re a fan of that arena of electronica.

James Blake - Take a Fall For Me (feat. RZA)

This is the third track off James Blake’s latest album, Overgrown. I’ll do an album review later. “Take a Fall For Me” is melancholic and moody, and Blake’s high pitched manipulated vocals with RZA’s lyricism are beautifully mixed with hypnotic piano tones and deep bass lines. I haven’t given the entire album a thorough listen yet, but I’ve had this track on repeat about three times now and am definitely impressed so far.

First heard this ultra-deep, smooth and hypnotic track on Dusky’s Essential Mix last year. I was immediately put into that late night, deep house trance that commands your entire body to move. The bass lines on “Oblivion” are so low that you need serious headphones or good speakers to even hear them, and the spoken vocals are absolutely mesmerizing. A must-have tune for all serious fans of the deep house scene.

I never thought I’d be listening to hardstyle in a non-ironic fashion in 2013, until I heard this mind blowing jam “Together” that my good friend Noel shared with me today. “Together” pays homage to the good ol’ days of that uplifting, “we-are-pirates” sort of rising synth combined with that sharp kick drum, resulting in a whole bunch of people from the Netherlands and Melbourne battling it out on the floor to see who has the superior shuffle.

According to his Soundcloud, DJ Snake is “Born & Raised in Motherfuckin’ Paris,” and I absolutely love that he reps his Parisian roots hard. This track is absolutely flooring to me. Hardstyle meets trap in a manner that is très fantastique. I have to admit, trap generally does not scratch the right itch for me, but this track is absolutely on point for everything that I do enjoy about the genre.

The first drop is masterful, with the requisite repeating “bounce” vocal / lasers and a bassline that would light up any dancefloor. The song once again tilts its head in the direction of that classic hardstyle sound and build, but the second drop is pretty unexpected and absolutely godly. The heady arabian sounding bass along with the repeated “work” vocal is guaranteed to get people slithering.

The best part? He’s giving the track away for free via his Soundcloud in 320kbps quality. Class act. Throw this track on repeat, because if you’re like me you were probably wishing that “Together” had another few minutes on it. Werk.

Just listened to Kingdom’s first track off his forthcoming album, Vertical XL which drops on May 28th and I’m quite excited for its release. “Bank Head” has Kingdom’s signature cascading bass waterfalls, combined with claps and a warm synth to produce a very warm, summer-ready beat. You can hear the influence of his time with Night Slugs on this track with the echoing vocals that are reminiscent of Girl Unit’s dancefloor dominator “Wut.” Enjoy the smooth bass.

I’ve been on quite the disco kick lately, and this late-2010 remix of The Chemical Brothers epic track “Swoon” has me on a psychedelic disco adventure. The Norwegian Lindstrom and Prins Thomas take this heady track on a ride on the Scandinavian space-age-disco train, a la Todd Terje, with synths that are pretty much out of this world. I would love to hear this jam with my feet in the sand somewhere. Can’t wait for summer.
