James Blake - Live at Coachella 4/14/2013

A very decent and pretty high quality recording of UK’s legendary James Blake throwing it down at Coachella last weekend. I wasn’t able to make it there this year, so this is the next best thing for me, and his set is absolutely beautiful. This is now convincing me to find a way to buy tickets to one of his sold out shows in SF at Mezzanine coming up. Thanks to Evil Concussion on Soundcloud for posting his recording of the set.

Disclosure - What’s In Your Head (Mak & Pasteman Remix)

The Nottingham based UK duo Mak & Pasteman take Disclosure’s silky smooth and groovy track “What’s In Your Head” and turn it into a club banger with the 808 bass treatment. Their deep and heavy basslines on this remix are very reminiscent of the Dirtybird or Night Slugs sound to me, and I think you’ll enjoy this one quite a bit if you’re a fan of that arena of electronica.
James Blake - Take a Fall For Me (feat. RZA)

This is the third track off James Blake’s latest album, Overgrown. I’ll do an album review later. “Take a Fall For Me” is melancholic and moody, and Blake’s high pitched manipulated vocals with RZA’s lyricism are beautifully mixed with hypnotic piano tones and deep bass lines. I haven’t given the entire album a thorough listen yet, but I’ve had this track on repeat about three times now and am definitely impressed so far.
Kerri Chandler - Oblivion

house music is all about love
First heard this ultra-deep, smooth and hypnotic track on Dusky’s Essential Mix last year. I was immediately put into that late night, deep house trance that commands your entire body to move. The bass lines on “Oblivion” are so low that you need serious headphones or good speakers to even hear them, and the spoken vocals are absolutely mesmerizing. A must-have tune for all serious fans of the deep house scene.
DJ Snake - Together [free download in 320!]

I never thought I’d be listening to hardstyle in a non-ironic fashion in 2013, until I heard this mind blowing jam “Together” that my good friend Noel shared with me today. “Together” pays homage to the good ol’ days of that uplifting, “we-are-pirates” sort of rising synth combined with that sharp kick drum, resulting in a whole bunch of people from the Netherlands and Melbourne battling it out on the floor to see who has the superior shuffle.
According to his Soundcloud, DJ Snake is “Born & Raised in Motherfuckin’ Paris,” and I absolutely love that he reps his Parisian roots hard. This track is absolutely flooring to me. Hardstyle meets trap in a manner that is très fantastique. I have to admit, trap generally does not scratch the right itch for me, but this track is absolutely on point for everything that I do enjoy about the genre.
The first drop is masterful, with the requisite repeating “bounce” vocal / lasers and a bassline that would light up any dancefloor. The song once again tilts its head in the direction of that classic hardstyle sound and build, but the second drop is pretty unexpected and absolutely godly. The heady arabian sounding bass along with the repeated “work” vocal is guaranteed to get people slithering.
The best part? He’s giving the track away for free via his Soundcloud in 320kbps quality. Class act. Throw this track on repeat, because if you’re like me you were probably wishing that “Together” had another few minutes on it. Werk.
Kingdom - Bank Head (feat. Kelela)

Just listened to Kingdom’s first track off his forthcoming album, Vertical XL which drops on May 28th and I’m quite excited for its release. “Bank Head” has Kingdom’s signature cascading bass waterfalls, combined with claps and a warm synth to produce a very warm, summer-ready beat. You can hear the influence of his time with Night Slugs on this track with the echoing vocals that are reminiscent of Girl Unit’s dancefloor dominator “Wut.” Enjoy the smooth bass.
Underworld - Holding the Moth (Audiojack Remix) [download]
Hello readers! It has been FAR too long since I’ve posted anything, so I’m going to kick off my posting again with a track that is fit for rocking a large room, festival, headphones…any locale with the bass.
The English house legends Underworld take you on a journey on this track, with the techno duo Audiojack cutting it up spectacularly. This track is dear to my house-loving heart. I’m pretty sure the first time I heard it was at EDC 2009, I definitely remember James Zabielaletting this song bang on the main stage with tens of thousands of people in the L.A. Coliseum, and hearing this jam takes me right back. Turn it up and let it take you on a ride.
with a glass eye on you
electric eye on you
who could dance like you
dance like you dance all day
pleasure dance like you delay
…keep it simple
Dusky - Essential Mix 2012-10-13
GO DEEP. As a huge fan of the deep house genre, the UK duo Dusky takes the clean and deep bass to a whole new level. It is a perfect mix for an afterhours, warehouse soiree. This is hands down one of my favorite essential mixes I’ve heard all year. I can only imagine a 2am-6am set with these beats going down. Thanks to Alexandra for opening my eyes to this one.
Untold - Anaconda (Tribal Guarachero refix)

Lose your inhibitions and get tribal on this track, folks. Truly a fantastic and catchy beat. Heard this first on Mount Kimbie’s XLR8R podcast which came out recently, if you haven’t given it a whirl I suggest you peep their take on future bass ahora mismo. Get weird, get tribal.
Mount Kimbie - Before I Move Off (Live from the Daytrotter Session) [download]

A must have for all big fans of the eccentric and experimental UK duo Mount Kimbie. This version of “Before I Move Off” is one of my favorites, I absolutely love how they tweak the song live compared to the album version. I can still remember feeling ecstatic at Coachella ‘11 when the bass thundered throughout the Oasis dome. This stuff is heaven for my ears. If you haven’t seen them live, I highly recommend you see them when they are in town. If they aren’t in your area, at least listen to their Live at Deaf Institute, Manchester set.
The XX - Angels (Bodhi Remix)

An excellent, chilled out remix of “Angels” by Bodhi. You don’t wanna miss this groove, I find it more exciting/dancefloor ready than the original.
Example - Say Nothing (TC Remix)

Sort of different than my usual posts, but I love variety and diversity of music and genres, I am all about the eclectic. Little drumstep/dnb/dubstep remix of Example by TC. This sort of jam takes me back to The Do Lab of Coachella 2011 where this is the type of raging that goes down. Scope this banger.
Beats Antique - Skeleton Key [download]

Feeling tribal. These guys definitely put on one HELLUVA heady show live, I saw them at Sea of Dreams last year and they were quite mind-bending/eye opening (Third Eye, that is!). Dig into these tribal, ethnic, bass heavy blissed-out beats!
Justin Martin - Don’t Go [download]

From Justin Martin’s newest album, Ghettos and Gardens, this track brings the Dirtybird bass with a clean, refined, and catchy flavor. This highly melodic tune is intertwined with pure sounding bass and is exactly what I enjoy about Dirtybird’s flavor of house. I highly recommend you check out this album, as it is straight fire from start to finish. This track is a clear indication of the rest of the album’s quality.
DJ Kicks By Photek - [Download]

This DJ Kicks album by Photek is easily one of the best mixes I have heard in 2012. Thanks to Electronic Battle Weapons, I was able to listen to this album the first thing this morning. Give it a shot and you’ll know what I am talking about, if you’re into heavy, clean, bass music with hints of tech house and dnb. I don’t want to spoil the magic of this album, so give it a listen yourself and see how awesome this DJ Kicks album really is. Peep the tags if you want more descriptions. Please listen to this with good headphones or great speakers with heavy bass for true appreciation of this wonder.
