Pretty Lights - I Know The Truth

Pretty Lights pretty much destroyed it, played this song as his encore at his SF show at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. I stepped out of the venue just as this song dropped, and had to dance my ass off outside because they weren’t letting people back in!! Show was killer, lights were fantastic, and this song is just epic crunchiness. DJ Shadow was also sick, although I wasn’t too big of a fan of the emcee.
Mount Kimbie - Field (Daytrotter Session Live at SXSW) [download]

This version of “Field” by Mount Kimbie from SXSW is my second favorite, behind the one they played for Red Bull Music Academy. The difference between this heady, experimental track and the one from their album is the heady dark intro and the explosion of bass at [3:54]. I cannot say enough good things about the Canadian duo live. I saw them at Coachella 2011 and they were without a doubt the best act I saw the entire weekend. And… they’re coming to SF in November! If you haven’t seen these guys before, this is a strong recommendation to catch them when they’re in your hood. limzen certified.

Example - Say Nothing (TC Remix)

Sort of different than my usual posts, but I love variety and diversity of music and genres, I am all about the eclectic. Little drumstep/dnb/dubstep remix of Example by TC. This sort of jam takes me back to The Do Lab of Coachella 2011 where this is the type of raging that goes down. Scope this banger.
Beats Antique - Skeleton Key [download]

Feeling tribal. These guys definitely put on one HELLUVA heady show live, I saw them at Sea of Dreams last year and they were quite mind-bending/eye opening (Third Eye, that is!). Dig into these tribal, ethnic, bass heavy blissed-out beats!

Zeds Dead - In The Beginning
Alpines - Cocoon (Nocturnal Sunshine Remix) [download]

Miss Maya Jane Coles, under her dubstep alias Nocturnal Sunshine drops some dark, deep, smooth and sexy sounding beats with this Alpines remix. This song has a very underground, industrial vibe to it, and I love the direction that she is taking with these futuristic sounding beats. It is no surprise that she is making such gigantic waves in the industry with her infectious house music and dark yet thoughtful tracks under her dubstep moniker, Nocturnal Sunshine, and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with for 2012.
The XX - Night Time (Synkro Remix) [download]

UK based producer Synkro provides us with a very chilled out, dubsteppy version of The XX’s “Night Time.” Definitely a very mellow piece. I first listened to Synkro from his RA podcast, which I highly recommend. He reminds me a lot of Mount Kimbie and Koreless, with slight variations in style. Chill.

Nocturnal Sunshine - Broke [download]

Future Bass Thursdays [pt.2] Here is a fresh, futuristic sounding track by Nocturnal Sunshine, Maya Jane Coles’ dubstep alias. Maya takes dubstep in a completely new direction with this incredibly deep, bassy track. This single, with “Can’t Hide The Way I Feel” on the A-Side and “Broke” on the B-side was just re-released on vinyl because of its popularity. I’m going to need to pick this one up if I can manage to get it without ordering it from the UK! I can’t believe that MJC was dropping stuff this back in 2010 (December, to be exact.) It is still completely fresh in 2012, this just goes to show you how forward thinking and progressive her sounds are.
Fenech Soler - LA Love (Zed’s Dead Remix) [download]

10/16 Show Review - Amon Tobin at the Music Box, Hollywood

Amon Tobin - Journeyman [download]
Journeyman. ISAM takes you on a journey, man. The first track off Amon Tobin’s ISAM (2011) album, “Journeyman” can give you a pretty good idea of the type of visual and auditory adventure that I embarked on this past Sunday at the Music Box. This show truly took me on an odyssey filled with beautiful sights and experimental sounds. I had never really heard much of Amon Tobin’s music until I saw the preview for his new audiovisual show, ISAM, back in July. After watching a YouTube clip of Amon doing it live at the Mutek Festival in Canada, I knew that I had to see his show. So naturally I bought a pair of tickets back in July for a show in October that I knew little about.

ISAM live is quite possibly the most technologically advanced visual show in the entire world, and hands down the best that I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen Nosaj Thing, Deadmau5, Pretty Lights, and other artists with fantastic lights and visuals, but Amon Tobin’s setup was on an entirely different level and playing field. The stage was built with 64 white cubes, stacked in a tetris-like manner that made it stand out as a wild 3D contraption.

When the visuals were projected onto these cubes in perfect synchronicity with the music, I felt like I was seeing in 4D or something! It was absolutely mind blowing. Amon DJ’ed from the center cube, as you can see in the picture* above, and once in a while the cubes would become translucent and you could catch glimpses of him tearing it up in his little cube. There were the craziest projections on these cubes - moments where a spaceship would whizz through the cubes, or when the music got extremely intense there would be an electric lightning storm that you could feel from the sights and sounds.
There were sections in the show where it felt as if I had just entered The Matrix.

Musically, Amon Tobin dropped a lot of dubstep, but the rest of the show was experimental electronic noises and soundscapes that were perfectly synced up with his visuals. There was even a moment where he dropped some drum and bass, and the crowd went absolutely nuts. I for one danced especially hard during this section! I was impressed with how long the show went; I surely didn’t expect it to go as long as it did. Amon finished the show with a huge drop and confetti was BLASTED all over the crowd, and cheers erupted throughout the crowd in approval of this avant-garde spectacle. If you ever get a chance to see Amon Tobin’s ISAM audiovisual show, please do yourself a favor and go. It’s like visual ecstasy for your eyes. Your eyes (and ears) and soul will thank you.

Blue Foundation - Eyes on Fire (Zed’s Dead Remix) [download]

So I’m taking requests for any new genres, artists, or styles of music that you want to see featured on my blog. First request comes from my buddy Tom, who requested that I throw some Zed’s Dead up on the site. Until this morning, I was honestly not very well-versed in Zed’s Dead… I had heard some of their tunes, but I hadn’t really looked into them that much. I have definitely been missing out, as these guys are deep and throw down a very futuristic take on dubstep.
Zed’s Dead are a dubstep duo from Toronto, Canada who have a very unique, grimy sound in a world of overplayed samples and synths. This song, “Eyes on Fire” is a great example of their diverse flavor. Enjoy.
Bonus: A little .zip I found with a sampling of their tracks.
Zed’s Dead - Some Random and Awesome Tracks [download]
okay okay this is the last Emalkay track I will post. it’s heavy.

Emalkay - Metropolis [download]
Emalkay continues to amaze me with his repertoire of ridiculous bass. If you bump this song LOUD, you will feel all the different layers of bass. Emalkay is an anomaly to me. He’s heavy yet light and melodic at times. He’s drops the filthiest, dirtiest sounds, yet he has some of the cleanest sounding bass in other tracks. Emalkay’s Eclipse (2011) might just be one of my favorite dubstep albums this year… along with Magnetic Man’s eponymous, monstrous album.
…and here’s a treat in [320kbps goodness]. It’s a .rar so if you don’t know how to unarchive it, I suggest you figure it out!

guess i’m feeling dubby today… hold on

Rusko - Hold On (feat. Amber Coffman) (Sub Focus Remix) [download]
Without question, one of my favorite dubstep tracks of all time. I was privileged to see Sub Focus tear it up with a live set at EDC 2011 in Las Vegas, and when he dropped this track, everybody went bonkers. I prefer Sub Focus’s remix to the original… the tempo, and ahh the drops! So dirty, so wobbly, so filthy! So amazing. Hold on.
