Today marks the split of Canadian group Azari & III. Their self-titled debut album will always hold a special place in my heart (and in my record collection!) I really wish that I got to see them live when they were touring. I’m sad to see them end their project and split ways, but so stoked for all the good music they put out in their years. This is the first mix that I ever listened to by them that hooked me right from the first track, “Changes” by Sixth Borough Project. I’ll miss you Dinamo Azari & Alixander III, thank you for the great music throughout the years, and hope to see you guys collaborating or producing in new guises soon! Sorry I couldn’t put a streaming link through Tumblr, this is a “private sound” of Fact Mag that I can only link to (trust me this one is worth your time!)
Midnight Juggernauts - Shadows (M83 Remix) [download]
2008 was a great year for M83 (and music in general, really.) Apart from delivering the shoegazey, retro bliss that runs through the veins of Saturdays = Youth, Gonzales worked on a plethora of remixes for other artists that carry his signature synth sound and dreamy vibe.
M83 takes the cosmic disco of Midnight Juggernaut’s “Shadows” (listen to the original here) and slows it down, glitches it out, and bathes it in warm synth-heaven. The result: the epic dreams and heady imagination of Gonzales are alive and very real in this song.
Sunday Girl - Where Is My Mind (Florian Paetzold Remix) [free download in 320!]
This is an emotive and blissful remix of a cover of The Pixies’ signature track, ”Where Is My Mind.” British pop singer Sunday Girl provides a mellow rendition of the original on the piano, and then Florian Paetzold gives the cover much more depth by layering a simple deep house beat with chillingly beautiful vocals. When I heard first heard this one on the Dennis Besta - Wechselbad Der Gefühle Teil 2 podcast (mellow, highly recommended), I had to stop what I was doing and do some trackspotting until I found this gem. This remix definitely does the original justice, hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
SOHN - The Wheel (Distinction Remix) [free download in 320 goodness via his SoundCloud!!]
UK producer Distinction (/dɪˈstɪŋkʃən/) takes SOHN's upbeat and bouncy jam “The Wheel” and gives it a moody makeover. I love how clear and pronounced the vocals start out in this remix, and by the minute mark the listener is immersed in a melancholic, chopped and screwed world with a deep trapped out bass. It is truly a beautiful remix of an already magnificent track, and I suggest that you go and grab the free download above and play in your headphones some hazy and reflective evening.
SOHN - The Wheel
Heard this massive tune on DJ Koze’s FACT Magazine mix and it’s probably one of my favorite tracks I’ve listened to all year. Check it out.
Thievery Corporation - Lebanese Blonde (French)
"Lebanese Blonde" is of my all-time favorite Thievery Corporation songs… and today is the first time I heard it in French! Enjoy the French version of an already stellar track.
Flume - Left Alone (feat. Chet Faker)
"Left Alone" is probably one of my favorite tracks off Flume’s eponymous LP from 2012. On repeat.
The Weeknd - Wicked Games (Hannah Wants & Chris Lorenzo Remix) [[free download!]]
A bass heavy, deep and unique 126 bpm remix of The Weeknd's “Wicked Games”. The rolling bass in this track just keep coming and undoubtedly causes the floor to erupt. I absolutely love the back and forth pace of this track. Scope the free download that Birmingham’s Hannah Wants released today!
Fred Falke & The Knocks - Geronimo
You want to go to the sky with me? Geronimo!
Just listened to Frenchman Fred Falke’s Kitsune minimix via Soundcloud and it is definitely one of the best sun-kissed disco —> electro mix that I have heard in a while.
"Geronimo" is the final track on the 30 minute set and it is exactly what I’ve been missing in electro house… banging yet not over the top, blissful and melodic, pure feel good raging music. Check out the minimix and you’ll know what I’m talking about.
Hannah Wants & Chris Lorenzo - Teardrop on the Fire [download]
Hailing from Birmingham, Hannah Wants is one of the multitude of rising electronic music talents from the UK today. I only discovered her music a few days ago, when listening to catz n dogz essential mix (which I highly recommend by the way…) and now I am stoked to have found her unique and irresistible beats. When I heard the “Teardrop on the Fire” vocal sample on the Essential Mix at around [50.05] followed up by some banging deep house with an even smoother passage into a slower, grooving rhythm, I had to pause and find the tracklist STAT and look into what artist made me get out of my chair and dance unrestrainedly with headphones on. Don’t forget to download the track for free in [320 kbps] above from the artist herself…More to come on Hannah Wants, keep an eye out for her!
DJ Snake - Together [free download in 320!]
I never thought I’d be listening to hardstyle in a non-ironic fashion in 2013, until I heard this mind blowing jam “Together” that my good friend Noel shared with me today. “Together” pays homage to the good ol’ days of that uplifting, “we-are-pirates” sort of rising synth combined with that sharp kick drum, resulting in a whole bunch of people from the Netherlands and Melbourne battling it out on the floor to see who has the superior shuffle.
According to his Soundcloud, DJ Snake is “Born & Raised in Motherfuckin’ Paris,” and I absolutely love that he reps his Parisian roots hard. This track is absolutely flooring to me. Hardstyle meets trap in a manner that is très fantastique. I have to admit, trap generally does not scratch the right itch for me, but this track is absolutely on point for everything that I do enjoy about the genre.
The first drop is masterful, with the requisite repeating “bounce” vocal / lasers and a bassline that would light up any dancefloor. The song once again tilts its head in the direction of that classic hardstyle sound and build, but the second drop is pretty unexpected and absolutely godly. The heady arabian sounding bass along with the repeated “work” vocal is guaranteed to get people slithering.
The best part? He’s giving the track away for free via his Soundcloud in 320kbps quality. Class act. Throw this track on repeat, because if you’re like me you were probably wishing that “Together” had another few minutes on it. Werk.
Azari & III - Hungry for the Power (Jamie Jones Ridge Street Remix)
Woke up this morning remembering the Hot Creations showcase in Barcelona last year with Jamie Jones and Richy Ahmed. I clearly remember going absolutely bonkers when Jamie Jones dropped this track, taking this original tune on a walk on the darker and deeper side of the spectrum. Not a new tune or anything but definitely on my list of favorites. Stay deep.
Mount Kimbie - Made to Stray [download free next 7 days]
'Shadows turn to grey
A slave today
He cowered beyond reckless tracks of impulse
Made to stray around rough coasts
When grace is close to home’
First track released off the new Mount Kimbie album Cold Spring Fault Less Youth, whichdrops May 27th on Warp Records. So excited for the sophomore album by my favorite experimental beat artisans, Dom and Kai. Can’t wait to see what they have done since the heady, blissful, and ethereal Crooks and Lovers.
Spooky - Candy (James Zabiela Remix)
After posting that last track, I’ve been on a James Zabiela kick. Another jam from his set at EDC 09. Melodic progressive house broken beats with some echo chamber action. This one’s for you Aaron! Float on.
Underworld - Holding the Moth (Audiojack Remix) [download]
Hello readers! It has been FAR too long since I’ve posted anything, so I’m going to kick off my posting again with a track that is fit for rocking a large room, festival, headphones…any locale with the bass.
The English house legends Underworld take you on a journey on this track, with the techno duo Audiojack cutting it up spectacularly. This track is dear to my house-loving heart. I’m pretty sure the first time I heard it was at EDC 2009, I definitely remember James Zabielaletting this song bang on the main stage with tens of thousands of people in the L.A. Coliseum, and hearing this jam takes me right back. Turn it up and let it take you on a ride.
